One of life’s biggest questions: What makes a house a home?
What happens when you’ve outgrown home? Do you remodel one room, build an addition or purchase a lot and custom build?
Remodeling can transform your space from the inside out or focus on exterior upgrades and
additions. Endurance Build & Remodel has done it all. We asked our builders, contractors and clients for their best “big picture” advice about beginning a home remodeling project.

Bathroom, basement and kitchen projects
A whole-home renovation offers the comfort and convenience of the home you know and love and meets your family’s changing needs.
Kitchen remodels feature new, energy-efficient appliances and layouts that make food
prep, storage and clean-up easier. An upgraded dine-in kitchen creates space for kids to
help and brings busy families together.
Basement potential? If your home and foundation are in good shape, consider
remodeling a partially finished or unfinished basement to include a bathroom, bedroom, recreation space—or all three.
A renovated or new bathroom(s) creates privacy and comfort for growing families, teens
and houseguests. New plumbing and appliances can help reduce utility costs and your
home’s carbon footprint.
Extensive interior remodeling projects can begin anytime from late summer
(August/September) to early spring (March/April).

Look outside
Exterior remodeling projects get results and get noticed. They increase your home’s square
footage and may even reduce your carbon footprint.
Decks and outdoor kitchens and living rooms are trends to watch. They offer flexibility
when it comes to entertaining during Wisconsin’s warmer summer and autumn months.
See our blog post about using natural lumber or composite wood for decks and siding.
New siding gives your entire home a makeover and provides additional protection from
water damage, pests and other environmental factors. Sparkling, sealed and easy-to-
operate windows enhance this look and may reduce energy costs. Read more on our
blog.
Exterior projects begin and end, weather permitting, during the late-spring to early-
autumn months.

Focus on four
Endurance Build & Remodel contractors, designers and carpenters are trusted craftspeople, experienced in renovations and custom construction projects of all sizes. Four things Team Endurance asks every client to consider:
Budget – From your current savings and credit rating to home equity and home
construction loans and interest rates, how much can you invest? Is this number flexible?
Can you spend more to get exactly what you’re looking for? Multi-room and kitchen remodeling projects are more extensive and cost-intensive projects than bathroom or bedroom remodels, typically. Set a ballpark budget for each room if you’re remodeling several spaces.
Timeline – Price and availability of construction materials can vary due to supply-and-
demand. Please keep in mind that factors outside your/our control may affect
remodeling-project timelines. A remodeling project can take three to six months and contractors may work inside your home—often. Make plans to accommodate your routine during remodeling: minimizing construction noise, waiting for new appliances to be delivered and installed, etc.
Trust – We recommend research: company reviews, builder/contractor interviews, visits
to showrooms and model homes. Choose a team who is licensed, insured, and has a
track record of reliability and transparency. You’re trusting them with your dream
home!
Vision – Make a list of your family’s non-negotiable needs and wants. Things like
privacy, sustainability, storage and outdoor space—every client’s list is unique. What
home renovations best meet your family’s changing needs?

Create a vision or mood board. Choose a theme that ties your remodeling needs
together, fits your lifestyle and your home’s architecture: bungalow, cottage,
midcentury, multi-use spaces, smart-home design, etc. Collecting color swatches,
appliance reviews, and a list of unique amenities—self-cleaning bidet or coffee
station—is a fun, low-cost way to jump start your remodel. Your vision gives contractors
and designers an overall guide of your needs and wants even if it changes over time.
